With many architectural styles, such as Gothic, Queen Anne, and Romanesque, the world’s largest continuous town square is in Centerville, Iowa. This impressive designation was provided to the City of Centerville because there are no stoplights or stop signs in the Square. Situated in the center of the Square, the Appanoose County Courthouse was dedicated in 1904, but placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 through the efforts of the Centerville Historic Preservation Commission. The entire Square is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of the significance that the Square plays into the development of Centerville as the county seat. The district includes 119 buildings, which includes the business buildings that face the Square.
